COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCES

Social Security's "compassionate allowance initiative" allows the agency to automatically award disability benefits for certain illnesses that obviously meet the requirements.

This means a simplified and highly expedited application process without the need for time consuming appeals and legal wrangling. Presently more than 250 catastrophic illnesses meet the criteria for a compassionate allowance.

It is up to the claimant or claimant's representative to obtain and submit medical evidence sufficient to prove the eligibility for a compassionate allowance.
